Journey to meet Ellen:
BOOK ON ILLNESS A 'HOT' PROPERTY
By: Vicky Newman
In October 2009 at age 16, Nathan Wells became ill-so critically ill he was forced to drop out of school.
This year, he is looking at celebrating the anniversary of his now-past illness in an even bigger way.
The agreement to offer the book on iTunes was signed in January and the book became available in June.
"I have had a lot to process the last few weeks. October 15 will be the one year mark and I never hired any publicity for the book," the 19-year-old college student said.
Wells was working long hours at a physicians office, taking a full 16-hour course load at Pellissippi State toward his psychology/Pre-med major while marketing his book online to the best of his ability. Although, he wrote every word of the book, he has actually never read it.
"I wrote the book because I, along with many people around me, thought I was going to die," he said. "I wrote it for my family, and the people around me. I wanted to record my history of my illness to help others and leave something for my family."
"This will be my fist time in L.A.," Wells said. "When we flew to Hawaii we stopped at LAX Airport, but I never really touched the soil. They were calling our flight when we got off the plane."
"He was so sick," she said. " Some days when his mother was at work he would come and lay on my couch and say, 'Just let me rest, Nana. I am so tired.' But he had a lot a people praying for him all over the world."

Last month, he surprised his family again by taking them on a trip to Hawaii, funding the vacation with proceeds from book sales. This year, he is looking at celebrating the anniversary of his now-past illness in an even bigger way.Nathan is headed to Los Angeles this weekend to discuss marketing possibilities for the book. Public relations firms contacted him after the book was downloaded from iTunes by 20,000 readers in four weeks. Suddenly, not only is Wells alive and well, but his book seems to have taken a life of its own.The agreement to offer the book on iTunes was signed in January and the book became available in June. "When we went to Hawaii, the iTunes sales had not started," Wells said. "They send weekly updates on how the book is doing and when they told me what had happened, I couldn't believe it. I feel like I am in a Twilight Zone and I don't know of I will be coming out anytime soon. I am flying out to L.A. to talk with law firms, and PR firms.""I have had a lot to process the last few weeks. October 15 will be the one year mark and I never hired any publicity for the book," the 19-year-old college student said. Nathan has been talking with a Knoxville public relations firm since the boom became an iTunes "hot" property, but the West Coast firms contacted him. The firms paid his plane travel, hotel room and provided a free ticket for him to attend the T.V. taping for "The Voice."Wells was working long hours at a physicians office, taking a full 16-hour course load at Pellissippi State toward his psychology/Pre-med major while marketing his book online to the best of his ability. Although, he wrote every word of the book, he has actually never read it.The boom chronicles his 189-day migraine headache that kept him from functioning and for which doctors could find no cause. "I wrote the book because I, along with many people around me, thought I was going to die," he said. "I wrote it for my family, and the people around me. I wanted to record my history of my illness to help others and leave something for my family."When he decided to publish the book, hoping it could help others, he persuaded more than a dozen friends, and former teachers to edit the material. " I just couldn't read it and relive it right then," he said."This will be my fist time in L.A.," Wells said. "When we flew to Hawaii we stopped at LAX Airport, but I never really touched the soil. They were calling our flight when we got off the plane."Joyce Colvard, Nathan's Grandmother, said his recovery is a miracle."He was so sick," she said. " Some days when his mother was at work he would come and lay on my couch and say, 'Just let me rest, Nana. I am so tired.' But he had a lot a people praying for him all over the world."
